Orange Coral (Cherax Holthuisi)
Shrimp Name: Orange Coral (Cherax Holthuisi)
Origin: Irian Jaya (New West Guinea); Indonesia
Description:The Orange Coral crayfish is fairly new to the hobby and is viewed as different from other crayfish in terms of coloration, the size of the eyes, the shape of the rostrum and the shape of the chelae. This type of species is exciting not only because of its colorful appearance but also because it is plant friendly. A hobbyist’s best friend when it comes to a planted tank. The color of this crayfish ranges from orange to yellowish. When fully mature it averages between 8 – 10 cm. Their diet consists of phytoplankton, dead leaves, frozen food and fish flakes.
Water Parameters: In terms of water requirements they are not that demanding. Regular water changes also contribute to their well-being. Temperatures should be between 20 – 25° C. A high pH of 7.0 – 8.0 is sufficient.
Sexing: In order to successful sex them one should wait until they have matured a little bit. The males are much bigger than the females.
Breeding:There is no known documentation that currently supports the possibility of them breeding in captivity. In order to succeed in breeding them, regular water changes, proper water parameters and a healthy diet would definitely encourage them to breed.
Compatibility:Amongst themselves the crayfish are friendly and this also applies to other inverts as well. They are plant friendly so it is possible to house them in planted tanks. Despite their non aggressive stance it is also encouraged to create many hiding spaces especially when they start molting.
