Red Crayfish/ Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii)

Crayfish Name: Red Crayfish/ Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii)

Origin: Mexico, U.S

Description: They have a dark red tint that is quiet attractive. When fully mature these crayfish average a size of 7-8cm. They have long large red claws with bright bumps and red tips. They like to feed on dead plant matter and they also like to eat plants a lot. Crayfish are known to be a little aggressive towards each other and Red Crayfish are no different. To reduce any clashes amongst crayfish, lots of hiding spaces should be provided. This space is mostly beneficial when they are berried and molting as this is when they are most vulnerable.

Water Parameters: Regular water changes are essential when it comes to keeping these species. The Red Crayfish is tolerant to different water habitats ranging from freshwater to saline conditions. Since they are also used to swampy areas in their natural habit, it should not be too much of a challenge to accommodate them.

Sexing: Male and female Red crayfish are almost similar in size. Sexes are separate, but the location of gonads are similar in both males and females.

Breeding: So long there is a male and a female, they will readily breed without any delay. You do not need any huge numbers in order for breeding to take place. If the species are healthy and well fed they will readily breed.

Compatibility: Peaceful creatures that seem to do their own thing when separated from each other. They are not aggressive towards other smaller species.
